radius tool

Post by curt »

I got my south bend 9 lathe restored completely and been playing for a few months finally learned to thread real well with it :D :D . now I want to make a couple dies for my tube bender so I need a radius tool anybody have one on a south bend that wouldn't mind sharing measurements . I would prefer one that could be mounted inplace of the compound for a more ridged setup but I am using a axa toolpost if that helps . also on the plans for the bender I seem to be missing the follower for the die . I do have the 1 1/4 die and follower so I think I should be able to use that along with the plans to build the outside of the dies and get the holes drilled . I definatly want to do a couple in the diamond cant let maz have all the fun . how close does the follower need to be to the die I have noticed on the one I have it is a little bit away until I pull the arm foreward a little bit is there a set dimention for this or is there a little forgiveness here ?

Man I love my 9" SB! I know we all like to build things from scratch, but there comes a point when you have to say uncle. I've been threatn' to build these for about 2 years now but never pulled the trigger. Look under "Chris's Tips"... there are some basic dimensions that will get you going in the right direction if you really want to build it. I'll probably end up just buying both.

I was thinking about buying the one in the first link . I did see one online somewhere that someone made that took the place of the compound rest on the cross slide I really liked looked real solid but cant seem to find it . I am not that good with the milling machine yet and i have almost no tooling for it yet so it might take me a little while to get started with makin one that will go inplace of the cross slide but that one in the link is cheap enough and should get the job done for now

I have yet to make the ball turner!!!

They say the dies are not true round? You move the tool out where the bolts holding it down are on this one to make bigger turned parts and move slide inward!

I will build this ball turner when I do!!!

I made the concave one and will use the one above for this when I do make it!!!

A radius cutter I threw together during a contest build to cut a Indian head out for a domed piston. The down angle of the tool was intentional to prevent digging into the gummy cast aluminum.

A ball turner that fits into a boring bar holder and cuts on top of the stock I threw together out of junk last winter.
