spring'er fever hits a sporty
So I took on an "apprentice". Really just a student who wanted to learn and i want to share what little knowledge i have. With all the talk about springers and designing them, he wanted to build his first homemade one. here are his mock ups on a 2001 sportster...
he is using a sugar bear tree template but widened out to help clear the rotor at the inside face of the leg. It is an offset tree but may go to the dick allen inline tree depending on what we come up with for rocker design. so we have no rocker design set yet.the tube legs(sprung to rigid leg spacing) are spaced 2.625" on center, and no other modifications are done to the bike. He is using simple hand tools and a tig welder to make everything.

- SELF INTRODUCTION: So,...I guess I'm a newb. Can I get my "General Smart-Ass" moniker back, or do I actually have to build something. Like a chopper for example. I am hoping to re-start a build that's been sitting in my shop for a couple years with most of the parts already acquired.
Just wanted to thank Dan and anyone else involved in getting this board up and running.
Dan is a personal friend of mine and one of the finest people I know. I have a world of respect for him, not just for his work here but also for reasons beyond this forum.
Not sure if that's 200 words, but that's my intro and I'm sticking to it.
BTW, I'm Mark. Not Indian, just a fanatic of the motorcycle brand.
Re: spring'er fever hits a sporty
I've got a little experience with this sort of thing, and I can say that I don't think that front wheel is going to roll.

I just returned home from a 2 week trip in New Mexico, have a few good pix, can't wait to share my off-highway traveling. Got to put 1400 miles on the scoot.

Re: spring'er fever hits a sporty
Yeah I just noticed the height thing after I took at look at the pictures again after the previous posts. The riders knee should at least be even with the top of the head cover so it could come down at least 2-inches maybe more. What is the ground clearance in the mockup? Looks like 8 so maybe 4" would be better. Everybody nit-picking the project is why a lot of folks won't post anything so you guys have guts. This is great looking project as you've already got all the bits and pieces so the owner will be able to actually ride it pretty soon. I figure you're going to hardtail the back end. Long and low, long and low, long and low if you catch the hints.
By the way that dude riding the bike doesn't look like he'd take to much crap from us so he deserves a mean looking scoot.

just so you guys know he has the rear blocking .75" lower to facilitate the proper spring preload when weighted.

- SELF INTRODUCTION: I was on the last board as bonustoolkit. I have changed that to my given name.
I started a project build there " File and Fit." I paln to continue that when I go back home in Dec. 2011. I first joined the board when Gary W had it in the year 2005. That was the time I really gained an interest in building chops. I have a long way to go, compared to some here.

Re: spring'er fever hits a sporty
greg made some changes by going with inline trees, bracing the bottom of the legs with a proper spacing, and measuring for the rockers.

- SELF INTRODUCTION: I have been working with Chris C aka Krymis for the past year at Penn College. I am currently working on building a springer front end for my 01 sportster. Krymis has been helping me with this and teaching me what he knows of motorcycle building. I would like to be a member of this forum so that i can further my learning of building motorcycles. this has been a passion of mine for a long time due to my fathers passion to ride. I was a member of the old fourm but was very overwhelmed with classes therefor i was not very active and now i have the time to learn what i have wanted to learn for many years.
Re: spring'er fever hits a sporty
I finally get to say hi to all of you. thanks everyone for your thoughts on my build. Krymis has been teaching me a lot over the last few months and yet i know i have barely started to scratched the surface. I'm very excited about the build all together and the info that i am learning. i hope that i can keep building and learning all at the same time. Also to Gary yes the bike is sitting very high at stock height of 7 inches. I had though about making straps to bolt on for the rear springs as struts but decided that i would rather save up the money so that i can do a full build frame and all the way i want. thanks again to everyone and especially to krymis for taking the time to post these pictures.
