my favorite springer knowledge

Post by krymis »

so most of us know Gary produced a few instructional CDs. On one of them he describes how to build an old school springer with had tools. Dan proved that it can be done as described. Once i saw that post i started grabbing every bit of knowledge i could about building frontends. The one frontend that just tripped my trigger was Sugarbears springer. I studied build pictures and pieced together what i thought was a good knowledge base of the frontend. I talked to ken, gary, irish rich, johnnyB, and even Sugarbear himself. so somethings i have found:
1. offset trees (believed to be 1 forward)
2. trees are 1.5" thick
3. spring perch is 1" thick
4.
ran out of time i will keep adding and post pictures.

SELF INTRODUCTION: Hi Dan, thanks for your time and energy spent on this new board. I hope you will give me a waiver on the email account, I have used gmail so long I don't have a clue what my service provider account is.
I just returned home from a 2 week trip in New Mexico, have a few good pix, can't wait to share my off-highway traveling. Got to put 1400 miles on the scoot.

don't be you didn't have to explain the fact that you wanted to buy something just to blueprint it and hang it on the wall to your wife. She looked over the parts wall and went through and counted how much money i wasted on blueprinting shit. She was not pleased. I have had just about every name brand springer, girder, leafer, and spirder in my possession at one time or another. I have lists of blueprints for many of the big name frame builders too. I have traveled to other side of the country to measure bikes like a WCC el diablo. So when you are envious think that you get to bury a bone with your old lady and just get to listen to yelling.

So...Did SugarBear give you his blessings in printing and sharing his design. Did he tell you his secrets? Will you share???

What I'm more interested in than geometry, is the story about how he came up with it. Was it a design, a progression, or an accident?

I don't think that Sugar Bear has an 'secrets' as most springer builders pretty much already know any tricks or tweaks that have ever been invented. Sugar Bear is just more flamboyant in his salesmanship and has had more opportunities to build some extremely radical front ends. He has cultivated a niche following but a lot of bike builders won't use his front ends on anything. Everybody has their preferences. That's why there are so many different types and styles of Choppers on the road today.
We've talked about what a lot of people call 'Sugar Bear' rockers on the CD's and on the old board but those long curved scimitars were being used on springers long before Al made them his signature.
