As I have finished the VW bike.....how about a VW car now.

I found a Vw Vokaro in a big mess and could not resist.

The original plan was to keep it simple. Not so much heavy mods and such. Just make it low and set up for autocross.

But as with everything I touch....it is going overboard or down the rabbit hole.

So now I am building a whole tube chassis for it.

Ball joint VW front suspension beam. With 2-1/2 drop spindles, disc brakes, and cut the grub screws loose to lower the spring even more.

I have all the rebuild parts coming....ball joints, seals ect.

For the back I currently am planning on the vw drums with the larger cylinders and good shoes. But that might change yet.....undecided about that now

Modified drums for the Enkie wheels.

A very old set of Enkie wheels I picked up cheap. They are not as old as the rest of the car. But I am thinking they will match the track racer look I am going for.

I painted them red and got the tires.

This is about when the plans went stupid.

I though....well jeez....it would be cool if it was mid engine like a porsche 550 spyder. So I started looking at that.....figured I could do it.

So then.....why stay an air cooled vw motor?

So.....

Now I have a Jap spec mazda klze v6. All aluminum, double overhead cam, 4 valve per cyl, but tiny......2.5 liter 8000rpm 200hp screamer. It is out of a sideways motor car like an mx6 or millennia.

This pic is not mine. But is close to what it will look like. The funky sideways motor intake gone and independent throttle bodies instead. And the red painted valve covers. The major difference in the picture and mine is that mine is a jap spec and has a distributor sticking out the back of the head.

So that leaves me building a heavily modified vw trans.....

Or.....

Something else.

I found a reverse rotation Porsche 901 5 speed side shifter trans for way less than I can build the vw trans for. It is the model trans that would be in a 914. Appropriate gear ratios and such and can handle the v6 already.

It is not local......and then the covid 19 hit.....so now waiting to go get it. Guy is supposed to be holding it for me until this is over.

Making the adapter for it right now. It is dimensionally the same as the vw...same axles and flanges and width. About 10mm longer bell housing to axle.

Again......originally sideways......no motor mounts on sides of motor.
So it will be on elephant ears at the adapter and the original single center mount at front (water pump end).

Made a fixture to hold the tube before cutting it up any further.

Then cut the splined hub out of the middle.
Then split the hub in the middle, machined it down, welded them into plugs to fit the tube.......and spread them out.
Now it takes the short type springs from a 60's swing axle, but uses the long type IRS spring plates.

It is not unusual to put the short type spring into a later tube....but to narrow it for tire clearance.
I am not narrowing....instead using the shortness to make a gap in the middle.

So now the oil pan hangs out the gap and the torsion is near the center line of the crank.

Good lord. That thing is gonna be a rocket!

I’m getting the feeling that you’ve been deep into VWs for a long time now to have this kind of knowledge about them. Looks like you’re having fun for sure.

Well then.......hmmmm maybe not rocket level.
As it still has less hp than the murdercycle.
The bike did 196.....at the wheels. That in the 225-230 range at the crank.

But....maybe I will turbo the v6. In a lot of ways I dont wanna.

I want it to look like a 50's to early 60's euro racer.
Of course it wont be authentic in any way. But I want it to appear as if vw was into racing like Porsche was.

That mazda v6 was co-engineered with Porsche. There is a link there back to vw. Of course most wont know what it came from being out of its normal sideways habitat.

So to have a distributor and independent throttles and stacks is important to me. I have even considered carbs instead of injection. But still those stacks just hafta stick out the back deck and the whole back end flip up like a 550 does.

Just want to confuse folks.

Almost time to start tubing it up.

The urethane bushings and the ball joints came in.

Mocked up one side of the rear.......and the camber is too much.
I am gonna hafta do something about that.
The arms originally have a couple negative degrees made in them. But lowered down I have around 5 degrees.
Maybe if I put the arms on upside down ..... I could be at negative 1 then.....maybe.

Whelp......never did get the rear suspension in that mock up to come into alignment.
So the mock up got broke back down and I bent on the frame some to get a couple degrees in the positive camber direction. I dont have the mock up back together yet to measure exactly what I got out of the bending work.

I did work some on the motor/trans/mount plate adapter some.
