neck material
Hello , I am wondering about useing 2" solid round hot rolled mild steel from a local steel crop outlet for neck material.the guy had no idea about specs for this ,my book I got says it should be a36 or 1020 i dont know how to tell the difference. Or should i just get a piece of cold rolled.?.

Re: neck material
I would think hot rolled would work its just more work with all the cleaning to weld it most regular cheap hot rolled is 1018-1020 anyway and I would think when you bore it out it will be around 3/8 thick for the cups and by the time its all braced in it should be fine
ever notice when you hit somethin or someone with a hammer you feel instantly better

I started a project build there " File and Fit." I paln to continue that when I go back home in Dec. 2011. I first joined the board when Gary W had it in the year 2005. That was the time I really gained an interest in building chops. I have a long way to go, compared to some here.

Thank guys...yes I looked at his page that is his less expensive one the more costly one is cold rolled 1018 bored out...i am suspect of my piece not being 1020 and maybe a36 which is a mismatch of whatever (i believe) as when Im drilling and milling it I hit hard spots sometimes that are hard to get through, lots of cutting fluid and real slow, i have only had that on the plate not the rods I get from them though. And then the benefits seem to be there are no pretensioned spots as can be present on cold rolled( no experience just reading) of which should not concern boreing it uniformly though , like I said no real experience , just bits of info I have found so am just thinking out loud here.

- SELF INTRODUCTION: Hi Dan, thanks for your time and energy spent on this new board. I hope you will give me a waiver on the email account, I have used gmail so long I don't have a clue what my service provider account is.
I just returned home from a 2 week trip in New Mexico, have a few good pix, can't wait to share my off-highway traveling. Got to put 1400 miles on the scoot.

Re: neck material
If you use solid stock you will have to drill the center for the stem. Most people use 2" pipe.
That's why Mechwerks labels his as DOM.
Much less work.

Re: neck material
If you use a heavy wall 2" pipe with .344 wall thickness, you can cut to length, then machine the ends for your bearing races.
That wall thickness allows for turning an hourglass shape into the outer surface between the ends, if you want.
Blaksmith was selling some years ago to help folks along with projects. I ordered one with no exterior turning, so the outer surface is untouched. I plan to use it for my trike project, which will hopefully begin again this winter.

- SELF INTRODUCTION: I've got motorcycles in my blood. Growing up with my dad riding them, I feel like I've always had my fingers tightly wound around handlebar grips. My taste for bikes and the family are strong and the only bike I'll ride is one that's been stripped down to the essentials. I don't care for all of high tech stuff on the new stuff. I just want simplicity. not a Limousine on 2 wheels.
